Sheridan Surgical Center proudly flies the American Flag, symbol of freedom and liberty throughout the world. We have also chosen to fly a smaller, simpler flag with an azure blue background and a gleaming five-pointed white star, the Bonnie Blue flag.
The Bonnie Blue flag was first raised in the year 1810 by farmers and citizens in the region of modern day Louisiana. Declaring freedom from an oppressive Spanish monarchy, these farmers established the independent Republic of West Florida. Happily, President James Madison and congress soon annexed the Republic into the United States. Since then, the Bonnie Blue flag has come to symbolize unity in independence.
The Republic of Texas flew the Bonnie Blue before statehood, and its lone star design was incorporated in some part by numerous southern states during the Civil War period. It was popularized by songwriter Harry McCarthy who set an old Irish tune to the ballad “The Bonnie Blue Flag”.
Modern usage of the flag emphasizes the importance of freedom, independence, and unity of purpose. At Sheridan Surgical Center, the Bonnie Blue Flag represents perseverance in our liberties to establish Sheridan’s first ambulatory surgery center. The Bonnie Blue Flag’s single star serves as a symbol of excellence and portrays our singular mission to provide the best outpatient surgical care for our patients.
